OLD TOWN- Chad W. Malbon, 55, of Old Town, Maine, passed away on October 21, 2026, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House from injuries sustained in a downhill mountain biking accident on September 13, 2026.
Born in Skowhegan, Chad spent most of his life in Maine. He attended Old Town High School and graduated with the Class of 1989. His greatest joy and proudest accomplishment in life was being a father to his two children, Conner and Marley. They were his world, and nothing made him prouder than being their dad. Outside of his love for his children, Chad had a true passion for the outdoors, especially downhill mountain biking. He loved the thrill, challenge, and freedom of racing down the trails, embracing the adventure and excitement that came with every run. Whether pushing his limits or simply enjoying the outdoors, biking brought out his adventurous spirit and was something he truly loved to share with others.
Chad will be remembered for his quick wit, warm smile, and generous spirit. He had a special way of making people feel welcome and cared for, whether through a perfectly crafted drink, a helping hand, or one of his embellished stories. While his stories may have grown a little more epic with each retelling, that was part of his charm. His love for family and friends, the laughter he brought to those around him, and his willingness to always show up for others left a lasting impression wherever he went. The love he gave so freely, the friendships he treasured, and the countless memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
One of his grandfather’s favorite stories to tell was about the day Chad rode his bike all the way from Old Town to Skowhegan simply to pay him a visit. The story perfectly captures Chad’s adventurous spirit and the deep love he had for his family.
In recent years, Chad worked alongside family at North Winds Stove & Fireplace in Ellsworth, where he was a valued member of the installation team.
Chad is survived by his mother, Jean Anne Malbon Sturrup; his father, Daniel Sturrup; his children, Conner and Marley Malbon, his sisters, Kyla Harrison and Duska Sturrup; and his nephew and nieces, Jacob and Jacey Harrison, and Olivia Storey. Chad was part of a large, loving family and will also be deeply missed by his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and so many dear friends. He loved his family and friends fiercely and unconditionally, and those fortunate enough to know him understood just how much they meant to him.
Chad was predeceased by his biological father, Gregory Malbon and his grandparents; Abbott and Regina Malbon, Norris “Nutty” and Josephine DeRoche, and Virginia Fenn.
In the spirit of bringing people together who loved Chad, there will be a potluck-style Celebration of Life at the Old Town Elks Club on Sunday, November 15th from 2-5 p.m. Those who wish to contribute are welcome to bring a dish, snack, or dessert to share. Most importantly, we hope you will join us to share stories, laughter, and memories of Chad.
