Obituary

Karen A. Courtessi, 70, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026, at Lowell General Hospital, following an unexpected heart attack, with her loving family by her side.

Born on December 7, 1955, in Lowell, Karen was the beloved daughter of the late James and Margaret (Crowley) Courtessi. She was raised in Lowell, in the Quebec Street area, and was educated in the Lowell school system. Her early years were rooted in the community she called home throughout her life.

Karen dedicated ten years of her life to serving as a foster mother for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. During that time, she opened her heart and home to numerous children and teenagers, many of whom were at risk. Her compassion and willingness to care for those in need made a meaningful difference in the lives of the young people she welcomed into her home.

Above all, Karen cherished her family. Being a grandmother was the greatest joy of her life, and being called “Nana” was a title she treasured more than anything. She loved spending time with her beloved granddaughter, Autumn, who brought her endless happiness. Karen also enjoyed traveling to New Hampshire’s Lakes Region with her son, Wayne, making memories that she held close to her heart.

Karen had a love for animals, with a particular fascination with whales. She was also known for her sarcastic sense of humor, which brought laughter and personality to those who knew and loved her. Her presence, wit, and love for her family will be deeply missed.

Karen is survived by her two sons, Wayne Brodeur and his fiancée, Jenny Roy, of Lowell, and Aaron Pratt of Lowell; her beloved granddaughter, Autumn Brodeur; her former husband, Bobby Brodeur of Dracut; her siblings, Carol Marchand of Tewksbury, Sue Mulligan of Lowell, Debbie Enman of Lowell, and David Courtessi of Lowell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was the sister of the late Linda Quill.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Karen’s memory may be made to the Lowell Humane Society or an animal charity of one’s choice.

In accordance with Karen’s wishes, a celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of McDonough Funeral Home.
