Sophie O. Shahtay, 98, of Bellingham, passed away peacefully on October 24 at Advinia Care in Northbridge, surrounded by the compassionate care of the staff who became like family.
Born in Bellingham on June 6, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Pauline Shahtay. Sophie was a proud, lifelong Bellingham resident and took great pride in the town she called home.
Sophie dedicated many years of her life as a secretary for the GAF Corporation, where she was known for her hard work, dedication and friendly personality.
She built many lasting friendships throughout her career and often spoke fondly of those years.
Sophie enjoyed going to the beach, where she loved the ocean views, the sound of the waves and the fresh sea air. She also had a passion for baking and was always happy to share her delicious treats with family, friends and neighbors. Her home was often filled with the wonderful aroma of something baking, and her kindness and generosity were felt by everyone who knew her.
She was a gentle, caring and thoughtful woman who always put others before herself. Her warm smile and the love she showed to everyone she met will be deeply missed. Her family and friends were the center of her world, and she leaves behind many cherished memories.
Sophie was the sister of the late Patricia Stearns and Dorothy Lewinsky.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, who will always hold a special place in their hearts for her.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, October 29 at 1:00 PM
in St. Joseph Cemetery, Medway.
