Elizabeth Gould (Jewett) Porter “Betty”, age 86, a resident of Plymouth, MA died on Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at Life Care Nursing Facilities in Plymouth, MA She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Wilbur Porter and her two sons, Leighton Jewett Porter of Chelmsford, MA and his wife Barbara and Jonathan Fred Porter of Plymouth, MA and his wife Deborah. Mrs. Porter was the daughter of the late Harold Ernest and Isabelle Foster (Lopez) Jewett. She was born in Worcester, MA on May 20, 1920, but spent most of her young life in RI. She was a graduate of Lincoln Preparatory School in Providence, RI and LaSalle College in Auburndale, MA. Throughout her life, Mrs. Porter frequently traveled to Gardner’s Lake in E. Machias, ME to spend time at Grove Cottage, her family’s cottage on the lake. At the time Camp Edwards was being constructed on Cape Cod, she was on the staff at the First Aid Station. She and her husband lived in Connecticut for several years before moving to Cape Cod. She was a member of the original staff at Cape Cod Community College when it opened in 1961, staying at the college until her retirement in 1980. The Porters spent several years in Florida before returning to the Cape in 1995.
In addition to her husband and two sons, she is survived by 5 grandchildren, Brian, Jason, Jennifer, Adam and Karyn and 4 great grandchildren. Besides being interested in her grandchildren, Mrs. Porter painted, played the piano and organ, and wrote articles for small publications in addition to spending several years compiling a family history and the personal narratives for the family genealogy. She also was a direct descendent of Elizabeth Tilley and John Howland.
Burial will be private. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements by the Richard Davis Funeral Homes of Plymouth and Manomet. Anyone desiring to do so may make a donations in her name to the Scholarship Fund at Cape Cod Community College, West Barnstable, MA .
