Obituary

Knights, Richard Colby, age 78, of Wellesley, passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and two youngest children.

Born on October 24, 1947, in Wellesley, Richard was the son of Ambrose Pete and Emma Knights, and the younger brother of Peter. From an early age, he possessed a lifelong passion for American cars that shaped both his career and his hobbies. For four decades, Richard owned and operated Rider’s Repair in South Natick, where he spent his days fixing cars and swapping stories with lifelong friends.

His love for cars started early. In high school, he earned the nickname "Knightrider" while sneaking out in his 1932 Ford Coupe after his mother went to sleep. After graduating, he attended the Wentworth Institute of Technology before being drafted into the Army to serve in the Vietnam War—a hard time during which he remembered his daily countdown to his "DEROS" day (date expected return over seas).
Richard lived an adventurous and vibrant life. Whether he was flying his ultralight planes, speeding down trails on his snowmobiles, or tinkering in his garage to the sound of solid gold oldies, "Rider" always knew how to have fun. Outgoing, kind, and wildly popular, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was and will forever remain very loved.

Richard truly cherished the many visits from friends and family over the last few months. Your presence meant the world to him. As he neared the end of his journey, he reflected on his time here with deep gratitude, sharing that he had lived a wonderful life and there was nothing more he could have ever wanted.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Knights, his brother Peter and Peter’s wife, Jane, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Maryann and Brad Smith, his children, Amy Knights of Hawaii, Chrissy Knights, and Todd Knights;  his precious grandsons, Henry and Johnny Siracusa, and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Good Shepherd Community Care Hospice, 160 Wells Ave. Newton, MA 02459 would be appreciated.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Richard at the Italo-American Club, 75 Pleasant St., Wellesley on November 21, beginning at 2:00pm.
