Elizabeth Marie “Lizzy” Rowell Young, 79, of Wray, Georgia, died Monday, October 12, 2026, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at New Bethel Holiness Baptist Church with the Rev. Edsel Young and the Rev. Nick Gardner officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday afternoon at the funeral home in Fitzgerald. She will also lie in state at the church 1 hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Young was born November 2, 1946, in Coffee County, Georgia, to the late Robert Waldo & Jessie Mae Goff Rowell. She worked as a Paraprofessional and substitute teacher for Irwin County Schools. Mrs. Young enjoyed working outdoors in her yard, reading, shopping and attending church. She was a member of New Bethel Holiness Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughters: Vivian Denney and Melba & Al Merritt; grandchildren: Nic & Maria Denney, Mac & Hali Denney, Heather & Garret Hortman, Casey & Janie Merritt and Anna Denney Nater; great grandchildren: Wyatt Denney, Harli Denney, Hensli Denney, Hannon Denney, Morgun Denney, Henry Denney, Emma Hortman, Benji Hortman, Alex Hortman, Drake Hortman, Clee Merritt, Joann Merritt, and Lillah Nater; sisters: Robert Lene Rowell and Jessie Lee Jones; as well as numerous special nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Carroll Young; sisters: Melba Grace Rowell, Vera Mae Smith, Mattie Young, Peggy Bess, and Deborah Conner.
