Orazio Bavaro, age 86, of Medford, MA and Serra di Pratola, Avellino, Italy passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, October 8, 2026. Born on November 2, 1939, and raised in Italy, Orazio moved with his wife, Carmela, and their three young children to Cambridge, MA in 1972. Orazio was the son of the late Audeno and Maria (Alfieri) Bavaro and brother to Maria Capone, Elia Capone, Eufemia Tornatore, Guido Bavaro, Raimondo Bavaro, and the late Alberto Bavaro.
Orazio was the devoted husband of 64 years to the late Carmela Bavaro and loving father of Audeno Bavaro and his wife Michele Bavaro, Maria DiMauro and her husband, Michael DiMauro, and Erminia Piccinonno and her husband, Eupremio Piccinonno. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Michael, Antonio and his wife, Christina, Stephen and his wife, Susannah, Daniele, and Leonardo, as well as three great-grandchildren: Enzo, Giovanni, and Arielle.
Orazio, or “Nonno,” as his grandchildren called him, was an incredibly caring and loving man who would do anything for his family and cherished being around his loved ones. He proudly worked for the Department of Facilities’ Custodial Services, Grounds Services and Repair & Maintenance teams at MIT for 27 years. Orazio had a passion for gardening and took great pride in the tomatoes, other vegetables, and flowers he grew in his giardino each summer. He enjoyed eating pasta and drinking a glass of wine with those he loved. Orazio devoted his life to his family, and he will be deeply missed. His memory will last forever in his family and loved ones.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to visiting hours at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main Street, Medford, on Wednesday, October 14, from 4 through 8 PM and again on Thursday, October 15, at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church, 118 High St., Medford, at 10 AM. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery.
