Sonja M. Mowatt, 59, of Tanglewood Drive, Greenville, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9, 2026, surrounded by her family at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. She was the beloved wife of David Mowatt, with whom she shared a wonderful life for over 23 years.
Born in Bellevue, Washington, she was the daughter of N’dine (Lougee) Schultz and the late Thomas P. Schultz, Chief Petty Officer, E-8 of the U.S. Navy. As the child of a Navy service member, Sonja lived a life of spirited adventure early on, relocating many times from Europe to the Middle East and cultivating a lifelong love of travel and the world around her.
A dedicated and compassionate healthcare professional, Sonja had a long career as a Registered Nurse for the State of Rhode Island at the Eleanor Slater Hospital, Zambarano Unit. A fierce advocate for her patients, she was always drawn to care for the most challenging cases with unwavering empathy and strength.
Sonja’s vibrant personality and zest for life touched everyone who knew her. She had a true flair for fashion and a brilliant sense of style, always staying ahead of the trends. Whether she was effortlessly rocking a bold lipstick or coordinating accessories that were the envy of many, Sonja always made a statement.
She loved the beach, swimming, and fresh seafood. A sophisticated cook with a passion for gastronomy, Sonja could follow a complex recipe or spontaneously create an incredible spread, and she was always ready to make a great frittata. She loved entertaining, bringing people together, listening to all kinds of music, and dancing.
Besides her husband Dave, Sonja leaves her stepsons, Christopher J. Mowatt, his wife, Amanda, and grandson Henry W. Mowatt of Billerica, MA, and Daniel R. Mowatt of Providence. She was the devoted daughter of N’dine Schultz and sister of Sean T. Schultz and his wife, Elizabeth all of Daphne, AL.
