Obituary

Thomas Leo Francis Dornan
August 18, 1950 – October 7, 2026

It is with heavy hearts, but with the assurance of God’s promises, that we announce the passing of Thomas L. F. Dornan, devoted husband, loving father, proud Pops, caring son, beloved brother, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. Following a sudden and unexpected cancer diagnosis and a brief but courageous battle, Tom passed into eternal life on October 7, 2026, at the age of 76, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born to Leo and Annabell Dornan, Tom was the third of four children and grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts. He attended Xaverian Brothers High School before continuing his education at Saint Anselm College. A man of extraordinary work ethic and unwavering dedication to providing for his family, he built a career in the baking and distribution industries, often working three or more jobs at a time. Yet, throughout his life, Tom believed he was born to be a pastor. Answering what he knew to be his God-given calling, he pursued a second career in pastoral ministry. He earned his Masters of Divinity and was ordained in the Lutheran Church. Tom faithfully began his called service within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and finished his 23 year Pastoral career in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). Ministry was far more than a profession to Tom; it was his life's purpose. He devoted himself to joining people where they were at, sharing the Gospel, shepherding others, and bringing people closer to Christ.

After God, family was the most important thing in his life. One of his greatest blessings was his beloved bride of 36 years, Dawn Marie Greene Dornan. In a love story that could only have been orchestrated by God, the two first met at clown camp, beginning a beautiful journey filled with faith, love, laughter, and adventure. Tom entered their marriage with four children, and together, their family grew with the blessing of two more children. Of all his accomplishments, perhaps his most cherished role was that of "Daddy Rabbit," a title that reflected the immense love and devotion he had for his six children and sixteen grandchildren.

A man of countless passions and talents, Tom embraced life with an adventurous spirit and contagious enthusiasm. A professional clown, surfer, sailor, motorcycle and car enthusiast with a special love for his Corvette, he was always eager for his next adventure. A natural storyteller, Tom had a gift for captivating those around him, sharing stories filled with humor, wisdom, and memories from a life well lived. He found just as much joy in life's simple pleasures, especially swings, carousels, and his beloved model trains, all of which reflected his playful, youthful spirit. A lifelong sports enthusiast, both as a team player and a fan, he could often be found proudly sporting the gear of his beloved Boston teams. He loved music, whether listening, singing, or playing guitar and drums. Tom was happiest chasing the sunshine, embracing the spirit of an endless summer, and making memories with those he loved. Of all his dreams and adventures, becoming a pilot was the one aspiration he never had the opportunity to fulfill.

Tom lived with a remarkable zest for life, a heart for others, and an unmistakable joy that left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. Whether through his ministry, his friendships, or the laughter and memories he shared with family, he had a way of making life a little brighter.

Perhaps no words capture the love he had for his family more beautifully than the closing line of his own memoir: “I remain your Tommy boy, Papa, Dad, Pops, Pop-Pop, Poppsie.” Though known by many names, each reflected a special place he held in the hearts of those who loved him.

Tom is preceded in death by his grandparents: Charles and Margaret Dornan, Frank and Bressie Crandall; parents, Leo and Annabell Dornan; his dear grandson Enzo Liuzzo and son-in-law David LaVaque

He is survived by his beloved bride, Dawn; his six children, Betsy Bauler (Eric) Dr. Erin Dornan-Liuzzo (Santo), Dr. Sarah Lavaque, Ryan Dornan (Colleen), Amber Fredette (Dr. Nash), and Candace McHugh (Sean); and his fifteen cherished grandchildren, Taylor Bauler, Gabriel Bauler (fiancé Brailee), Abigail Bauler, Reilly Bauler, Amelia Bauler, Eviana Liuzzo, Michaela LaVaque, Brianna Dornan (fiancé Reese), Travis Dornan, Adalynn Dornan, Vivianne Dornan, Madison Fredette, Kaleb Fredette, Mackenzie McHugh, and Peighton McHugh. His sisters Karen (Jim) Kendig and Patricia (Michael) Herbert and brother Daniel (Rachelle) Dornan as well as many nieces and nephews.

Though his passing came far sooner than anyone could have imagined, we find peace in knowing he is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior. His earthly ministry may have come to an end, but his legacy of faith, love, and service will live on through the countless lives he touched. Until we meet again, we will carry his love in our hearts, his wisdom in our lives, and his faith into the generations to come.

Until we meet again, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”- Romans 15:13
