Obituary

D. Mary Gucciardi passed away peacefully on October 4th, 2026, at the age of 94. She was born in Boston to Giovanni and Francesca (Intagliata) Noe. Mary and her younger sister, Rose, grew up in Boston’s West End, where Mary formed dear friendships that endured throughout her life.

After attending St. Joseph’s School in the West End, Mary went on to Cathedral High School in the South End, graduating in 1949. While still in high school, Mary worked part-time at Raymond’s Department Store. She often recalled exciting stories from those years, including holding down the handbag counter during the first sale after World War II.

Mary continued her education at Bryant and Stratton Commercial School, graduating in 1950. Next, Mary worked at the Boston Children’s Aid Society and later in advertising, where she booked ad time for accounts that included the MBTA. After leaving the workforce to raise her three children, Mary began a meaningful career at Lourie and Cutler, a Boston law firm. She started as a bookkeeper and advanced to the position of legal office administrator. The staff at Lourie and Cutler became Mary’s second family, and she was extraordinarily proud of her 20-year tenure at the firm.

In 1957, Mary married Anthony (Tony) Gucciardi, her devoted husband of 65 years. Together, they settled in Medford, where they raised their family in a close-knit neighborhood. Mary and Tony were loyal members of Saint Francis of Assisi Church, and Mary served in many volunteer roles including Mother’s Club president. Mary and Tony also loved to entertain, and it was always a special treat to enjoy her delicious baked stuffed lobster.

The couple traveled extensively, vacationing in distant locations throughout Europe and Asia. Their wanderlust took them on adventures until their mid-80s. Throughout her life, Mary loved to read and was an ardent patron of the former Fulton Street branch of the Medford Public Library. She read every bestseller and Oprah’s Book Club selection, often sharing copies of her favorites with neighbors and friends.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anthony Gucciardi. She was the devoted mother of Paul Gucciardi of Medford, MaryAnne Gucciardi and her husband, Richard Waechter of Chapel Hill, NC, Jeanne Emanuel and her husband, Richard Emanuel of Cambridge, and grandmother to Ted Waechter, Charlotte Waechter, Katherine Emanuel, and Audrey Emanuel. She was a loving sister to Rose Matthews of Falmouth.

Visiting hours will be held in the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, on Tuesday, October 13th, from 4 PM to 7 PM, and again on Wednesday October 14th at 9 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 441 Fellsway West, Medford, at 10 AM.
