Obituary

Gregory "Greg" Kent Jones, 69, of Anderson, Indiana, passed away on October 2, 2026.

Greg was born August 3, 1957, in Anderson to Herbert C. and Ruth A. Jones. A lifelong resident of Anderson, he graduated from Anderson High School in 1975 and built his life in the community he always called home.

On June 10, 1977, Greg married Linda Sue Harlan at the Anderson home of her parents, Michael and Patty Harlan. This past June, Greg and Linda celebrated 49 years of marriage. Together they raised their only son, Kris, in a loving home and built a life centered around family. Greg was a devoted husband who took great pride in caring for Linda and the people he loved.

Greg worked for many years in maintenance at Best Ever Dairy in Anderson, which later became Prairie Farms Dairy. Hardworking, dependable and endlessly capable of fixing things, Greg retired at the age of 59. Retirement simply gave him more time for the things and people that mattered most to him: his family, his church, fishing and lending a hand wherever one was needed.

Greg was a quiet and soft-spoken man, but those who knew him knew to listen when he spoke. He was wise, sincere and genuine, with a wonderful sense of humor. He was never the loudest person in the room. In fact, some of his funniest comments could be missed if you weren't paying attention. If someone talked over him, Greg was perfectly content to stop talking and let them miss the joke.

Above all, Greg was a man of integrity. He believed in showing up, being honest, saying what you mean and meaning what you say, and taking care of others, not only your family, but anyone who needed a hand. He lived those values quietly and consistently and passed them on to his son.

Greg's faith was an important part of his life. He attended Columbus Avenue Church of Christ in Anderson, regularly participating in Wednesday evening and Sunday morning Bible studies and worship. He volunteered as a greeter and, fittingly, also put his maintenance skills to use helping care for the church grounds.

Greg had a particularly special place in his heart for children and was always thinking of something that might make their day a little more fun. At the family's annual Campinfest, he might arrive with a box of cookies or popsicles for the kids, or some little pull-the-cord toy that would send something flying through the air. Whatever the surprise, the children could count on Greg having thought of them.

Fishing was one of Greg's lifelong pleasures and something he shared across generations of his family. When Kris was young, father and son spent countless hours bank fishing together. Eventually, Greg had a small boat of his own, and for several summers the family rented a little fishing cottage on Lake Naomi, where they spent summer weekends together. As the family grew, Greg continued the tradition, taking his grandchildren fishing and eventually taking his great-granddaughter Julia. He also enjoyed fishing with friends from church, sometimes followed by a fish fry shared with the congregation.

In retirement, some of Greg's greatest joy came simply from spending time with his family. He helped care for his grandchildren and his great-granddaughter Julia and remained a steady presence in their lives. He also had a faithful little companion in his beloved dog, Tinker, who frequently accompanied Greg on his outings. Tinker was a particularly appropriate name for the sidekick of a lifelong maintenance man who was always tinkering with something.

Greg once summed up his approach to life in a way that those who knew him will recognize immediately: "I'm like a diesel, may not be the fastest, but I keep going." And he did. Quietly, steadily and dependably, Greg kept going, taking care of things, taking care of people and leaving the people around him better for having known him.

Greg is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda Sue Jones; his son, Gregory Kristopher "Kris" Jones and his wife, Barbie A. Jones; his grandchildren, Jacob K. Jones of Anderson, Alexander S. Butler and his fiancée Carly of Anderson, and Allison E. Huckeby and her husband Carson of Loveland, Colorado; and his three great-grandchildren, Julia, Milani and Callum.

He is also survived by his siblings, Gloria Baughn and her husband Wilbur of Delphos, Ohio; Garth Jones and his wife Lynn of Anderson; Grady Jones and his wife Joyce of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert C. and Ruth A. Jones.
