HOLLIS- Hollis, Maine -Lois May Doughty, age 86, passed away on Sunday, September 27th, 2026, at her home in Hollis, Maine.
She had COPD and other serious health-related issues. She had been in-home hospice for two years, unable to get out of her bed. She lived in her daughter Ina's home and was lovingly cared for by Ina and Stacy primarily. But many in her family came to help often, along with the hospice staff. MaryAnn made sure she always had fresh flowers because Grammy Doughty always told us to bring flowers for the living who can enjoy them.
She was born on June 16, 1940, in Boothbay, Maine, to Warren Sumner Doughty and Rita Elizabeth Doughty.
Graduated from Boothbay Harbor High. Married Maurice Rubin Sprague on February 16, 1958, in Edgcomb, Me.
Then, after he passed away, re-married Frank Doughty on August 9, 1992, in Buxton, Me.
She worked at the Maddocks Packing Factory in Boothbay Me. Where she met Maurice, with whom she fell in love and married in 1958. She would tell her children stories about playing as a child in the Back Narrah’s in Boothbay Harbor, Me.
Also worked at a restaurant named Country Kitchen run by the Stanhope family. Later she worked at another restaurant named Two Trails in Standish, Me. Later she worked at the Portland Me. Fish factory and Barber Foods. Also, her and her husband Maurice raised many specialty breeds of hunting dogs. She was in the American Legion, women’s auxiliary. And the VFW. Lois loved to sing and play guitar. Very talented with any stringed instrument. She also sang in Maine country music awards. She sang with groups such as Elmer Larsen's Country Fever and Duke Knight and the Comancheros. She sang with a close friend who was known as ‘Hazel B.” Who somehow managed to at the age of 14 Hazel lied about her age and went overseas and sang for the troops in WW2. Her love of music brought her to many bluegrass festivals, where she played and sang. She wrote many of her own songs also. She reached a goal of being able to go to the Grand Ole Opry to be able to listen there.
Lois loved to play card games. The one she played with her family at home, her mom and her dad, and her siblings was ROOK. She would fondly call her father the worm because he managed to win quite a bit.
She absolutely loved to play the game of cribbage. And she would win there quite a bit as well. Her children would remember her on road trips, reading off the license plate, and at the same time counting 15/2, 15/4, 15/6, and a pair is 8 and so on. She loved swimming outdoors and made it a point to be certain that each of her children learned how to swim.
Lois’s husband Maurice and her oldest son-in-law Cliff went into the lobster fishing business and crab business for work. She would pick out the meat and sell it to help feed the family. And with the leftover lobster meat that was in the bodies she would make the best lobster bisque ever.
Each year around Thanksgiving, she would start to bake pies. So many different kinds. Never wasting anything, she would take the leftover pie crust and make cinnamon rolls that were amazing.
She would take the crust from the leftover bread and make the best bread pudding, and she could make so many other things that were just delicious.
One of the fun things that Lois did was drive in the Powderpuff Derby at Beach Ridge Speedway. Her car's name was “Bite You Bite You.”
