Mrs. Susan E. (Cox) Whicher, a resident of Hampton, New Hampshire, and beloved wife of Gordon R. Whicher, passed away at her home on Tuesday morning, September 22, 2026. She was 73 years old. Born in Methuen, Massachusetts on March 13, 1953, Susan was the beloved daughter of the late George N. Cox, Jr. and Mavis G. (Twomey) Cox of Andover, Massachusetts.
Susan was a proud graduate of the Andover Public School system and of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she met the love of her life and best friend, Gordon. Susan was a devoted Wife, Mother, Mimi and Teacher. At her core, Susan embodied motherhood in its truest form - nurturing, loving, protective and endlessly giving. She loved spending time with her 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren and watching them grow into amazing individuals. Nothing brought Susan more joy than cheering on her daughters and grandchildren in their endeavors; she was their biggest fan and proudest supporter and will remain so in their hearts. She dedicated more than 20 years to teaching, most recently as a respected and loved teacher at South Elementary School in Andover. She thrived in the presence of her students and found joy in watching them grow, many of whom stayed connected with her long after they left her classroom.
Susan's happy place was the beach. She grew up spending summers at Hampton Beach with her parents and siblings, a tradition she later enjoyed with her husband, daughters, grandchildren, and friends. She was a wonderful host and an exceptional cook who enjoyed filling her home with family and friends. Susan also loved to garden and would often be found tending to her blue hydrangeas and bountiful vegetable patch. She would lead the dancing when the Beach Boys came on and would never turn down a scoop of delicious ice cream. Susan was an eternal optimist with a beautiful smile who created her own sunshine. Her presence will be deeply missed, and her memory will live on in all who knew her.
Besides her beloved husband, Gordon, Susan is survived by her loving daughters and sons-in-law; Christina and her husband Brad Calderwood of Andover, Amy Whicher of Andover, and Laura and her husband, Samuel Rossetti of Reading, grandchildren; Paige, Nathan, Maeve, Juliet and Jacob, and her siblings; George (Joe) III and his wife Mary Cox of Louisville, Colorado, Lisa Cox of Andover, Sara and her husband Jonathan Faulkner of Homer, Alaska, Gerald Cox and his wife Cynthia Lemere of Needham, and Michael and his wife Lakshmi Cox of Andover. Susan was also the Mimi to her grandpups Millie, Moose, Nola and Poppy, who truly shared her love of Hampton Beach.
Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 4 to 8 PM. Susan's funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 10 am. Interment will be held in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover following the funeral mass.
