Maria Luisa Neves, 79, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at her son's home, surrounded by her loving family, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Maria was born on February 4, 1947, in Flores, Azores, Portugal, a daughter of the late Luis Vieira Garcia and Almerinda (Mendonca) Santos. She was educated in Portugal, where she earned an associate degree, and came to the United States in April of 1970, settling in Lowell, where she made her home and built a life filled with family, friendships, and cherished memories.
Maria was a strong willed woman who lived life on her own terms. She had a love for her family and treasured keeping in touch with those she loved. She especially enjoyed talking on the phone, visiting relatives, and maintaining close connections with family and friends around the world including California, Canada and Portugal just to name a few.
Maria had a special love for animals, particularly cats, and they brought her great joy throughout her life. She will be remembered for her strength, determination, caring heart, and the lasting connections she made with those around her.
Maria was the beloved wife of the late Antonio N. Neves, with whom she shared 32 years of marriage before his passing in 2002.
She is survived by her son, Norberto Neves and his wife, Margaret, of Lowell; her granddaughters, Katie Neves Ross and her husband, Gavin, of Grove City, OH, and Amanda Neves of Lowell. She was also the grandmother of the late Almerinda Neves.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Maria's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-9376.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Friday, September 18, from 10-11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell. Her funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. followed by procession to St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell.
