Paul R. Thalmann, 87, of Smithfield, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Marceline A. (Bernier) Thalmann, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage since their wedding on October 6, 1962.
Born in Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Joseph and Clare (Masterson) Thalmann. Paul and Marceline moved to Smithfield in 1968, where they made their home and raised their family.
Paul worked as a steamfitter for Hart Engineering for 35 years before retiring. He was deeply proud of his trade and his union, and throughout his career was known for an exceptional work ethic and dedication to his profession. He also gave back to the trade he valued so greatly by serving as an instructor in the union’s apprenticeship program, helping to educate and mentor the next generation of tradesmen. Paul also proudly served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard Reserve.
Outside of work, Paul enjoyed the ocean and time spent along the New England coast, as well as playing golf. Some of his greatest enjoyment, however, came from following the lives of his grandchildren and attending their many activities and events over the years. He took great pride in their accomplishments and treasured the time he was able to spend with them.
In addition to his wife, Marceline, he is survived by his three children, Brian P. Thalmann, also of Smithfield; Thomas P. Thalmann of South Kingstown; and Tracy A. Medeiros and her husband, James, of East Greenwich. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren (Erica, Kendra, Julia, Catherine, Paul, Allison, Tanner and Madeline) and three great-grandchildren (Isla, Sutton and Finn). He is also survived by his sister, Clare Northrup and her husband, Peter, of North Kingstown.
He was predeceased by his brother, the late Joseph Thalmann.
Paul will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, as well as a man of remarkable dedication and work ethic. His love for his family, pride in his trade, and the many years and experiences he shared with those closest to him will remain cherished memories.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Burial will be private. Visitation is respectfully omitted.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that memorial donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Philip Church in Greenville.
