Maria Gray, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, partner, and friend, passed away on September 6, 2026, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Maria was born on March 7, 1950, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, to Cecilia Cabrera Perez and Francisco Perez. She moved to the United States at the age of two, where her family settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Maria and her family later moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she raised her four children and built a life deeply rooted in family, faith,
service, and community.
Maria was one of the first residents of Villa Victoria and played an important role in the movement that helped shape and preserve the South End’s Puerto Rican community. She was also a founding member of Casa Myrna and dedicated much of her life to helping others through community activism and social services. Throughout the years, Maria worked at Boston City Hospital, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, and the South End Community Health Center, where she touched many lives with her compassion, strength, and generosity.
Maria was truly full of life. She loved dancing salsa, singing, gardening, knitting, crocheting, crafting, decorating, cooking for her family, and celebrating birthdays and holidays. She had a special gift for making people feel loved and making every celebration feel special. Whether she was hosting a barbecue, decorating for Halloween, singing in the choir, or creating something for her grandchildren, Maria brought joy, warmth, and energy wherever she went. Above all, she loved her family deeply and took great pride in helping raise and care for her children and grandchildren. Maria is survived by her life partner, Tony Cotto; her children, Michael Gray, Christopher Gray, Jenny Gray, and Maritza Gray Medina; and her daughters-in-law, Alejandrina Claussell Gray and Maria Dominguez Gray. She was blessed with nine grandchildren: Michael Gray; Romeo Gray and his wife, Asha Venugopalan; Cesar Gray; Raymond Emani Medina; Christopher Dominguez Gray; Cecilia Dominguez Gray; Anjeli Rodriguez; Juan Medina Jr.; and Julian Medina.
Maria is also survived by her brothers, Tony Molina and his wife, Lucy, and Francisco Perez. She helped raise her sister’s children, Lisa Morales, Adrian Medina, and Verlana Morales, and leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, neighbors, and members of the community whose lives she touched.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Milagros Perez. Funeral services will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 419 Shawmut Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts, on Monday, September 14, 2026. The viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service from 11:00 a.m.to 12:00 p.m. Burial at Fairview Cemetery will immediately follow the service. A repast celebrating Maria’s life will be held afterward in St. Stephen’s community room from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For those who wish to send flowers, they may be sent directly to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Donations may also be made in Maria’s memory to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church or to St. Stephen’s Youth Programs, which have been an important part of the lives of many of her grandchildren.
Maria’s life was one of love, strength, service, laughter, and community. She will be deeply missed, but the love she gave and the lives she touched will continue to carry her memory forward.

Maria nació el 7 de Marzo de 1950 en Bayamón, Puerto Rico, hija de Cecilia Cabrera Pérez y Francisco Pérez. Se mudó a los Estados Unidos a los dos años de edad, estableciéndose su familia en Bridgeport, Connecticut. Más tarde, Maria y su familia se trasladaron a Boston, Massachusetts, donde ella crió a sus cuatro hijos y construyó una vida profundamente arraigada en la familia, la fe,
el servicio y la comunidad.

A Maria le sobreviven su compañero de vida, Tony Cotto; sus hijos, Michael Gray, Christopher Gray, Jenny Gray y Maritza Gray Medina; y sus nueras, Alejandrina Claussell Gray y Maria Dominguez Gray. Fue bendecida con nueve nietos: Michael Gray; Romeo Gray y su esposa, Asha Venugopalan; Cesar Gray; Raymond Emani Medina; Christopher Dominguez Gray; Cecilia Dominguez Gray; Anjeli Rodriguez; Juan Medina Jr.; y Julian Medina.
A Maria también le sobreviven sus hermanos, Tony Molina y su esposa, Lucy, y Francisco Pérez. Ella ayudó a criar a los hijos de su hermana —Lisa Morales, Adrian Medina y Verlana Morales— y deja tras de sí a muchos sobrinos y sobrinas queridos, familiares, amigos, vecinos y miembros de la comunidad cuyas vidas tocó.
A Maria le precedieron en la muerte sus padres y su hermana, Milagros Perez. Los servicios funerarios se llevarán a cabo en la Iglesia Episcopal de San Esteban (St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church), ubicada en el 419 de Shawmut Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts, el lunes 14 de septiembre de 2026. El velatorio comenzará a las 10:00 a. m., seguido por el servicio funerario de 11:00 a. m. a 12:00 p. m. El sepelio en el cementerio Fairview tendrá lugar inmediatamente después del servicio. Posteriormente, se ofrecerá una recepción para celebrar la vida de Maria en el salón comunitario de la iglesia, de 3:00 p. m. a 6:00 p. m.
