Melbourne Alden Lane, lovingly known as Mel to his friends and "Bubba" to his grandchildren and great grandchildren passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on August 10, 2026, at the age of 85. He was born on February 4, 1941, in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Mel was preceded in death by the love of his life, Nancy Jane (Peterson) Lane, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, faith, and adventure. Together they built a home in Pembroke, Massachusetts, purchasing it in 1967 with a $500 deposit. There they raised their three daughters, creating a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and treasured memories.
He is lovingly survived by his daughters, Melinda A. Adams and her husband, Jeffrey; Jennifer LeClair and her husband, Gregory; and Allison Graham. He was a proud grandfather to Justin O. Adams, Rebecca A. Santos (Gregory), Victoria A. Croswell (James), Alexander LeClair (Shealyn), Daniel LeClair, Andrew LeClair (Ariana), Austin Graham (Nicole), Alden Graham (Jacqueline), Ashton Graham, Abigail Graham, and Amanda Graham.
His greatest joy was being "Bubba" to his great-grandchildren: Piper, Remy, Willow, Brinley, Olivia, Lucas, Logan, and Callyn, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Mel grew up in Milton, Massachusetts, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for family, hard work, and the outdoors. As a young husband and father of three little girls, he was determined to provide well for his family. During those early years, he often worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, never hesitating to sacrifice his own time and energy so his family would have what they needed. His quiet determination, and unwavering commitment to his family became defining characteristics of his life.
He was a proud member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 4, for more than 50 years. Beginning his career as a helper, he worked diligently to become a licensed elevator mechanic through years of perseverance and dedication. He retired after many years of service while working at the Massachusetts State House. Mel loved his truck and took great pride in caring for them. His truck was always spotless, well-greased, and meticulously maintained—a reflection of the care and pride he brought to everything he did.
His faith in Jesus Christ guided his life. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Duxbury and later South Shore Baptist Church in Hingham, Massachusetts, where he especially enjoyed the fellowship of the Men's Bible Study.
An outdoorsman, Mel loved hunting, fishing, and playing on the men's hockey team. He played for many years until a hockey injury—and knees that eventually refused to cooperate—finally convinced him it was time to retire his skates. He was also a longtime member of the Pembroke Rod & Gun Club and delighted in teaching his three daughters how to fish and shoot, proudly saying they could outfish and outshoot most boys.
Mel and Nancy shared a deep love for the ocean, and some of their family's most treasured memories were made on the water. Together they enjoyed boating, whale watching, trips to Cuttyhunk, and anchoring at The Spit for carefree summer days with family.
They also loved spending time on the Cape, where they would load up the truck and head to Sandy Neck Beach and Scusset Beach for the day. There, Mel taught his daughters to fish from the shore and search for hermit crabs. Those simple family days together became some of the most treasured memories.
More than anything, Mel loved being with his family. His legacy lives on in the values he passed to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—faith, hard work, and love for family.
While his family deeply mourns his absence, they rejoice in the assurance that he is now home with his Lord and Savior and joyfully reunited with Nancy.
