Obituary

BOYNTON BEACH, Florida. — Elizabeth B. (Stone) Elwell, 86, of Boynton Beach, Florida passed away on August 25, 2026, at Bethesda Hospital East in Boynton Beach, Florida surrounded by her family.

Born September 17, 1939, in Cornish, Maine, Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles & Izola Stone. She attended Cornish Grammar & High School and worked at several cafes and schools in Maine throughout her early life. On August 31,1958, she married the love of her life and husband of 64 years, Richard H. Elwell. They raised their family together in Maine and New Hampshire, where their home became a gathering place and the heartbeat of their family for generations. Elizabeth’s life was grounded in her faith and filled with an unparalleled love for her husband, family, and friends.

She was a constant and joyful presence in the lives of her grandchildren, showing up for every sports game, dance recital, and special occasion. She also took incredible care in making family traditions special. For many Easters, she planned elaborate egg hunts, creating personalized puzzles and clues to lead each person to their hidden eggs. Elizabeth found joy in bowling, crafting, and baking, and her famous whoopie pies were a beloved fixture at many family gatherings. Above all, she loved deeply, gave generously, and will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her beloved husband, Richard H. Elwell, and her two sons, Stephen Elwell and Jeffery Elwell. Elizabeth is survived by her other children, Judy Matulis and her husband Michael of Boynton Beach, Florida and Tim Elwell and his wife Trudie of Buford, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Sarah Elwell of Athens, Alabama; grandchildren, Stephen and Eny Matulis, Charissa and Micah Matson, Chris and Jordan Matulis, Jessica and Alex Hastings, Alex and Carilee Matulis, Matt and Maddie Matulis, Brianna, Alyssa and Joshua Elwell; and 19 great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12th at 12:30pm., with a 1:00 pm funeral at Poitras, Neal & York Funeral Home, 71 Maple St., Cornish, Maine. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Cornish.
