Obituary

Michael Scott "Mike" Deane, 66, passed away in the early morning hours of August 24, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after a brief and serious illness.

Mike was born on April 24, 1960, to Judy and Dick Deane in Muncie, Indiana. At the age of 18, he joined the Army and went on to serve four tours overseas, between South Korea and once in Germany. During his military service, Mike began battling polyarteritis nodosa (PAN), a serious illness that ultimately led to his medical discharge and affected him for the rest of his life. Even from far away, he found ways to leave an impression on his family. In the days when long-distance calls were expensive, he would call home and speak in the language of whatever country he was stationed in at the time, just to irritate them a little. After his medical discharge, Mike returned to Indiana, where he met his soul mate, Tina. Together, they shared 15 years, and he enjoyed spending time with her, his children, his grandchildren, and the rest of his family.

Mike will be remembered for his quick wit, his stubborn streak, and his unmistakable presence. After Judy's death in 1971, her parents, Kate and Kermit Frazee, remained a steady presence in the family's life, and their connection to Mike and his siblings was an important part of the family story. Mike helped keep Judy's memory alive for the younger children in the family who had little or no memory of her. Beneath it all, he loved his family deeply and valued the time he spent with the people who mattered the most to him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tina; his children from a previous marriage, Angela (Jon) Byrd, Ashley Deane, and Kenneth Deane; and his three grandchildren, Lucas, Abigail, and Matthew Byrd. He is also survived by his six siblings, Michele (Tom) DeWitt, Lora Deane, Timothy (Tonia) Deane, Mary (Tina) Deane, Christine (Scott) Davis, and Cathleen Bergeron; along with his nieces and nephews, Amanda (Aimee) DeWitt, Samantha DeWitt, Kathryn (Kyle) Richards, Christopher (Kristine) Deane, Jared Davis and Jordan Davis; and a mother-in-law, Bonnie Grogg. Mike is also survived by his Uncles, William (LuAnn) Frazee and Philip Deane; his cousins, Jeffrey (Marni) Frazee, Barbara Frazee, and several other aunts, uncles and cousins. He especially enjoyed spending time with his Uncle Phil and reminiscing about family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Judith (Frazee) Deane and Richard Deane; his maternal grandparents, Kathryn (Silvers) Frazee and Kermit Frazee; his paternal grandparents, Mildred (Crago) Deane and Lake Deane; his uncle and aunt, Richard and Wilma Frazee; his cousin, Christopher Frazee; and several other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

At Mike's request, no funeral service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be given to Wounded Warriors.
