Mary Rita Mahoney, 94, of Lowell, MA, passed away peacefully on Aug 18, 2026, at home surrounded by her children Elizabeth and Jack. Mary was the loving wife of the late John W. Mahoney with whom she shared 61 years of marriage until his passing in 2017.
Born in Lowell on July 25, 1932, daughter of the late Joseph H. and Eva C. (Murphy) McCarthy, Mary attended Lowell public schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School. In earlier years, Mary worked for United Airlines and for the Internal Revenue Service as a tax examiner.
In her spare time, Mary enjoyed her family and friends, traveling, playing tennis, maintaining her homes, spending summers in Hampton, NH with her family, and engaging in a variety of craft projects. She was an active member of the Piecemakers Quilting Guild, as well as a volunteer at the Immaculate Conception Church.
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth A. Mahoney, of Lowell and John W. “Jack” Mahoney Jr., of Exeter, NH. She was the grandmother of Emily Merrifield and her husband Keith, Sean McCormick and his wife Yuti Shah, Matthew Mahoney, Mitchell Mahoney and Murray Mahoney, and sister of Joanne Moynihan, Dr. Joseph G. McCarthy, M.D. and his wife Karlan, Brenda MacDowell and Louise Bower.
In addition to her parents and husband, John, Mary was predeceased by her brother Daniel McCarthy, and her grandson Michael J. Mahoney.
Friends and family may call at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury, from 6-8 P.M. on Friday, August 28, 2026. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday morning, August 29, 2026. The funeral procession will begin at 9:45 A.M. at the funeral home, followed by her Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lowell at 11 A.M. and committal services at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Road, Tewksbury.
