George Milton Hitchcock passed away peacefully in Hyannis, MA, on August 19, 2026. He was born April 12, 1947, in Springfield, MA, to George Brackett and Eleanor Esty Hitchcock. George attended Technical and Classical High School in Springfield and Cherry Lawn Private School in Darien, CT. While there his poetry was published in "The Atlantic Monthly" magazine. George enlisted in the Air Force
during the Vietnam conflict to honor his uncle Milton Esty. Milton served as a pilot during WWIl in the Army Air Corp. He gave is all when his plane was shot down in the South Pacific.
After George's service, he returned home and married Diane Byres in 1968. In 1971, he married his second wife, Gayle Cullinan. They managed the Tamarack Inn at Mt. Snow, VT. They then moved to Provincetown and managed the Avalon Apts. and the Iron Monger on Commercial Street, and the Seascape Motor Inn in Truro. His third wife was Patricia Gibson, and they married on February 14 and raised her two children, Keith and Joanne. George's fourth wife was Suzanne Long, and they had his first child, Dorothy Rose. She has been the joy of his life. He loved coaching her soccer and basketball teams. In retrospect of his life, it becomes clear why one of George's favorite songs was "To All the Girls I Loved Before..." by Willie Nelson.
Although not born in P-town, George always felt it was his real hometown. He was truly a "renaissance man." He first worked on the pier lumping fish, served on many fishing boats, and became a sword boat captain. When not fishing, George was a certified state construction supervisor who built and repaired many homes and businesses across the Cape.
George enjoyed serving on many P-Town boards over a 20-ycar span, including the Harbor Planning Corp and chairing the Board of the P-town Public Pier Corp. The selectmen awarded him a long-ierm service pin. For several years, he has volunteered at the Veterans' Food Pantry in Hyannis.
George is predeceased by his parents, his beloved brother, EverettE. Hitchcock, and his wife Patty Hitchcock. He leaves his daughter Dorothy and his two grandchildren, Tiffany Rose Hitchcock and John Thomas Callahan, 3°. He also leaves his favorite niece, Kell Hitchcock of Eastham, his nephew Adam McCann of England, and his sister Barbara A. Hitchcock of Sturbridge, MA.
George was a good friend to many people over the years, and these friendships meant the world to him. His second favorite musician was Jimmy Buffet whose song "A Pirate Looks at 40," summed up many parts of his life.
After his stroke in 2010, which paralyzed his entire left side, he struggled every day to do his best and kept those around him smiling with his witty remarks. George is most appreciative for the loving care he received from his nurses and aides, especially Annetta, and the support of the Veteran's Administration. A private service will be held at the family's convenience.
