Luis Q. Leal, 85, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Chelmsford, with his loved ones near. He was the beloved husband of Grace (Sousa-Brasil) Leal, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.
Born on July 15, 1941, on the island of Terceira in the Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Luis Tomas Leal and the late Marcolina (Silveira) Leal, both of the Azores. Luis grew up and was educated in Terceira, and it was there that he began his working life managing a store for its owner. He became the owner's right hand in every sense, handling the decorating, the maintenance, and the daily operations, an early sign of the resourcefulness that would define him. He also proudly served in the Portuguese military.
In April of 1975, Luis came to the United States for what was meant to be a vacation. He never went home. At the airport he met a young woman named Grace, and by that July the two were married, exchanging vows on July 20, 1975. What began as a holiday became a life, and the two built more than five decades of marriage together.
Luis went to work first for Canada Dry in Waltham as a machine operator, and later joined W.R. Grace as a laboratory technician, first in Acton and then in Cambridge. He retired from W.R. Grace after more than thirty years of dedicated service.
At home, Luis was a true master of all trades. There was nothing he could not do, from small repairs to full renovations, and he took quiet pride in keeping everything around him in good order. He loved his garden. He and Grace also loved to travel, taking many cruises over the years, and he enjoyed spending time at the casino, whether close to home or on a trip to Las Vegas.
His faith and his heritage were at the center of his life. A communicant of St. Anthony's Church and St. Margaret's Church in Lowell, Luis was a member of the Cursillo movement and a life member of the Holy Ghost Society, where he never missed a holiday gathering, a feast, or a party.
In addition to his wife, Grace, Luis is survived by his three children, Stephanie Leal and her partner Terrell Jackson of Nashua, Malinda Leal Salles and her husband Marcio of Lowell, and Luis M. Leal of Burlington, MA; and by his four cherished granddaughters, Alyssa Christopher and her fiancé Phil Comma, Sounya Chanthavong, Nicole Salles, and Sierra Christopher.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA 01852.
His funeral will begin at the funeral home on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 9 a.m., his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 374 Stevens Street, Lowell, MA 01851. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, 1251 Gorham Street, Lowell.
