
Eugene H. Murphy, Jr. age 79, a resident of Tewksbury for 49 years, passed away at Lowell General Hospital on Wednesday evening, August 5, 2026.
He was the beloved husband of Lois E. (Jacobson) Murphy, who passed away on June 5, 2024.
Born in Boston on November 23, 1946, he was the son of the late Eugene H. Murphy and the late Mary M. (Gillis) Murphy.
Eugene was raised in Dorchester and Stoughton. He attended Stoughton schools and graduated from Stoughton High School.
In 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal.
He was awarded several decorations for his active-duty service including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
Eugene was employed as a lineman by New England Telephone, NYNEX Communications and the Verizon Communications Company until his retirement.
In his spare time, he had a passion for studying meteorology. In addition, he enjoyed spending time outdoors backpacking and hiking the Appalachian Trail, scuba diving (including ice dives during the winter months) and target shooting at the Harvard Sportsman’s Club.
He is survived by three children, Heidi L. Green and her husband Daniel, of Lowell, Eric E. Murphy and his wife Kristina, of Lowell and Scott E. Murphy and his wife Gayle, of Merrimack, NH: his grandson, Soran K. Murphy. He was the brother of Margaret A. Innis and her husband Robert, of Billerica and the late Clare F. Pascani and her late husband John and the late Mary E. Murphy and her late husband Edmond.
He leaves many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Calling hours are Wednesday, August 12, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury, followed by a procession to Lowell Cemetery where his graveside service will be held at 11: 30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Shawsheen Animal Hospital Care Fund, at www.veterinarycarefoundation.org
