Mr. John F. Zipeto, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and longtime resident of Andover, passed away at the Vantage Nursing Home on August 4th. He was 79 years old.
Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, on November 17, 1946, John was the cherished son of the late John L. and Alda M. (Tomei) Zipeto and the devoted brother of Rena G. (Zipeto) Shea. John and his sister were the first in their family to attend college, a milestone of which he was immensely proud. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University in 1968, followed by master’s degrees from Boston University and Northeastern University.
After completing his studies, John began his career teaching chemistry at Randolph High School. Several years later, he transitioned into public service with the Environmental Protection Agency, a role that deeply resonated with his values. When Boston prepared for the “Big Dig,” he joined Bechtel Industries as an Environmental Engineer, where he was responsible for soil testing and overseeing environmental safety throughout the project—work he regarded as both meaningful and impactful.
Outside his professional life, John pursued many interests with enthusiasm. He enjoyed photography, singing, and participating in Andover town politics. A passionate traveler and lifelong learner, he explored much of the world with his wife, Ellen, while also cherishing the beauty of national parks and especially their favorite retreat, Ogunquit, Maine. His curiosity, kindness, and steady presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen A. (McKendry) Zipeto; his children, Diana E. Zipeto of Lowell and Matthew D. Zipeto of McKinney, Texas; his sister, Rena G. Shea of Kingston, MA; his grandchildren Kodi, Shelby, Rhain, and Sage; his great-grandson Bryson; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father-in-law of the late Carolyn Sue (Thompson) Zipeto.
Calling hours will be held at Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover, MA on Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 2 to 6 PM. Funeral services and interment will be held privately.
