Maria Elena Morales, formerly of Boston, passed away peacefully, at age 86, on Aug. 2, 2026.
Born Aug. 30, 1939, in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of Ernesto Morales and Vicenta Maldonado. Elena was a longtime resident of Boston and was well known for her outspoken, feisty spirit, deep devotion to family, and warm hospitality. Her home was not only an inviting space for her growing family but also for the many neighbors and friends that gravitated to her welcoming presence. She created an environment where all felt protected, loved, and accepted. This protective yet warm demeanor made her a well-known staple in every neighborhood she lived in.
She took great joy in being a grandmother, great-grandmother and a great-great-grandmother and was affectionately called “Lela” by grandchildren and neighborhood children alike. She was a woman of simple pleasures — trips to Walmart, knitting and crafts, cooking for loved ones, watching her novelas and spending time with family & friends was all she needed to feel content.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fernando Rivas; and by her children Maria S. Flores, Luz M. “Lucy” Flores, Osvaldo “Brian” Flores, Ana I. González and Juanita Morales.
She is survived by her children, Juan A. ”John” Flores & daughter-in- law Suzanne, Milagros “Millie” Morales, Magda E. “Maggie” Gonzalez, Carmen L. Alicea & son-in-law Ramon, Margarita Gonzalez, Maria E. Gonzalez & son-in-law Sal; & many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; siblings; extended family; and dear friends.
The family expresses gratitude for the love and support shown during this time.
