Richard Lakeman McCann, of Woburn, formerly of Medford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, July 26th, just weeks before his 88th birthday.
Dick was the son of the late William J. McCann of Arlington and Ruth (Mahon) McCann of Brookline, late brother Dr. William McCann and his wife Dr. Joan McCann of Essex, CT. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Christine (Parziale) McCann also formerly of Medford, and his six children; Maureen Rickenbacker and husband Tom, Richard McCann and wife Lisa, Karen Drake and husband Gary, Christopher McCann and wife Leah, Allison Stringer and husband John, and William "Bill" McCann, and wife Wanda. He was the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren, including Ruthy Rickenbacker and partner Maddy Popkin, Gregory Rickenbacker, Alyssa Stenquist and husband Corey, Katelyn McCann, Austin Drake, Alexander Drake, Anna Drake, Matt Foss and wife Salma, Sarah Foss, Christopher McCann, John Stringer, Jr, Carly Stringer, Stephanie Stringer, Ryan Stringer, and William "Billy" McCann, as well as two great-grandchildren, Austin Stenquist and Asa Popkin.
Dick grew up in Medford, met the love of his life, his wife Christine. A graduate of Medford High School Class of 1958, he was the captain of the soccer team. After high school, Dick became a Master Plumber and was a member of Local 12 Plumbers Union in Boston. He later worked for Polaroid, where he dedicated 22 years before retiring. Dick was a well-known and beloved member of the community, recognized as one of the founders of Woburn Youth Soccer, a founding member of the Irish American Club, and a dedicated member of the Board of Directors for Woburn Youth Hockey.
Dick was known not only for his exceptional craftsmanship but also for his generosity. He was always willing to lend a hand to friends, family, and neighbors, simply because he enjoyed helping others. In retirement, Dick found great joy in transforming his backyard and pool into a welcoming oasis where his family created countless cherished memories. When he wasn't tending to his yard, or enjoying a jelly donut, he could often be found "in the critics corner" at the O`Brien Ice Rink enjoying all levels of hockey, playing pool with friends or enthusiastically cheering on his grandchildren.
Above all, Dick will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his generous heart, his remarkable work ethic, and the impact he made on everyone who knew him. Deeply social and genuinely interested in others, he formed connections with ease and made people feel welcome and valued. Dick will be deeply missed by his wife, Christine, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and the many friends whose lives he enriched.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., WOBURN, Wednesday, July 29th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again Thursday morning, July 30th, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, at 11:30 a.m. Services will conclude with burial at Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
