BUXTON- Peter W. Goodwin, 78, of Buxton, Maine, passed away on July 22, 2026, in hospice care
after facing a long illness with quiet courage and unwavering resilience. Born on May 10,
1948, at Westbrook Hospital, Peter was the son of Jean C. Goodwin (Bernier) and step-dad
Bertrand Bernier.
Peter grew up on a farm in Gorham, Maine, and graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School
in 1967. Shortly afterward, he chose a path of service and joined the United States Navy,
where he served honorably from 1970 to 1973. In 1988, he married Debra M. White, and
together they built a life grounded in loyalty, humor, and deep affection.
A gifted painter known for his precision and pride in his work, Peter spent many years with
Logan Paint before retiring at 62. Even in retirement, he continued painting independently,
often helping friends and neighbors with the same care and attention to detail that defined
his career. He also subcontracted with his good friend Jim Goodall for several years before
fully stepping back from work.
Peter was happiest outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting, but his greatest joy came from
metal detecting, a hobby that blended curiosity, patience, and adventure. He detected
beaches in Maine and New Hampshire for treasure with his sister Sandra, and they found it!
He also enjoyed gardening and took pleasure in tending to the spaces around him.
Peter is survived by son Michael Goodwin of California, daughters Heather Goodwin of
Buxton and Melissa White of Brunswick. He leaves behind his sisters: Sandra Benner of
New Hampshire, Debra Thomas of Kentucky, and Vicki Coffee of Maine.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law Rhonda, who lovingly served as his longtime
caregiver; sister-in-law Wendy Foster; sister-in-law Lisa Clark and her husband Bill;
sister-in-law Stephanie Emmons and her significant other, Curt; and his mother-in-law
Celia Emmons. Peter leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and four cherished
grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Peter will be remembered for his love of cooking, especially after he found out about hen
clams in Old Orchard Beach and how to make clam cakes with them, which were later
known as “Pete’s famous clam cakes.”
A service to honor Peter’s life will be held at a later date.
