Obituary

SANBORNTON ---- Monyean Claire Scott of Sanbornton, New Hampshire, died in her home on Monday, June 20, 2026.

She devoted her life to the craft of teaching and learning. She was a passionate gardener, bird enthusiast, and animal lover. In retirement, she resumed horse riding, which she enjoyed in childhood, especially during summers with her grandparents as a child in Quinter, Kansas. As a retiree, she competed in dressage competitions and raised and trained multiple dogs.

Monyean was born in Avon Park, Florida, on June 16, 1944, and was raised in Cambridge, MA, and Bronxville, NY. She graduated cum laude from Radcliffe and earned a graduate degree in Early Childhood Education from Lesley University.

Monyean was a public school teacher for the Laconia Public School District for over 35 years at both Pleasant Street and Woodland Heights Elementary. Additionally, she taught Adult Education GED courses and tutored English as a Second Language through Pemi-Baker Literacy

Although raised in urban environments, Monyean loved the lakes, trees, and mountains of central New Hampshire and especially enjoyed long drives to discover backroads and off-the-beaten-path locations. Peter Brown (deceased), of Alexandria, NH, was her trusted copilot. She was his “Dearie” until his passing.

Monyean spent years redesigning her house to create an open and sunny home where she chose to age in place, receiving in-home hospice care with the Granite VNA until her death from complications of Lewy Body Dementia. Several caregivers provided daily care and companionship for Monyean in her final years. Her family is filled with gratitude and fondness for how they each enriched Monyean’s life with adventures and laughs.

Monyean is survived by her two daughters, Consuela Scott Thompson, of Baltimore, MD, and Heather Scott of New York, NY, son-in-law, David Thompson, and her granddaughter, Nia Thomas.

A small graveside funeral is planned for the summer, followed by a celebration of life at a later date.

The family is requesting NO FLOWERS, please. Donations in memory of Monyean Claire Scott may be made to either Granite VNA (www.granitevna.org) for Hospice Services or New Hampshire Food Bank (nhfoodbank.org).
