Debra Ann “Debbie” (Jones) Donovan of West Roxbury passed away on July 19, 2026. Beloved wife of Mark S. Donovan. Devoted mother of Mark S. Donovan, Jr. of Roslindale, Antoinette “Toni” Hemphill and her husband Kevin of Franklin, Helen Wood and her husband Jeremy of Franklin. Adored daughter of Annette (DiChiara) and the late Floyd Jones of West Roxbury. Dear sister of Russell Jones and his wife Linda of Plymouth, Virgie Fitzgerald and her husband Danny of West Roxbury. Loving grandmother or “Nan” of Joshua, John, and Joey Hemphill, Julia Ann, Rose, and Hazel Wood. Sister-in-law of John Donovan and his late wife Theresa of West Roxbury. Grateful friend of caretaker Wandy Valenzuela. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Debbie dedicated 24 years to teaching, spending most of her career as a beloved third-grade teacher at Beethoven Elementary School in West Roxbury. She cherished her students, and her classroom was a place filled with warmth, laughter, creativity, and kindness. Even as multiple sclerosis gradually took away her mobility, it never diminished her passion for teaching. She continued to show up for her students, first with a walker and later from a wheelchair, demonstrating remarkable strength and resilience. Alongside reading and math, she taught her students invaluable lessons about perseverance, compassion, empathy, and treating others with kindness. She was deeply loved not only by her students but also by their families, colleagues, and the entire school community.
Above all else, Debbie's greatest joy was her family. She never allowed her illness to define her or prevent her from making memories with the people she loved most. Whether traveling on family cruises, cheering from the sidelines at out-of-state baseball tournaments, or taking in the beauty of the Grand Canyon on a recent family trip, she embraced every opportunity to be together. She found equal happiness in life's simplest moments—Sunday dinners, cuddles from Arturo and Hanibel, backyard birthday parties, and holidays spent surrounded by those she loved. Valentine's Day was her favorite holiday because it gave her one more reason to tell her family how much they meant to her. Debbie's life was a reflection of unconditional love, unwavering strength, and extraordinary grace. She was, simply, love itself.
Funeral from the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre St., West Roxbury on Thursday, July 23rd at 9:00am. Followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Theresa of Avila Church, 2078 Centre St., West Roxbury at 10:00am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.
