It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Mary Ellen (Hanscom) Damato. Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Anthony (Tony) James Damato, their children, Deanne Marie Damato Copeland, her husband, Robert Copeland of Norton and Daniel John Damato, his wife, Anne Marie Damato of Middleboro and Grandchildren Kylie Marie Damato, Megan Elizabeth Damato, and Kaitlyn Ellen Damato. As well as her 2 brothers, George P. Hanscom, his wife Dorothy and John Hanscom, his wife Margaret, both of Canton.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, George P. and Helen Francis (Donnelley) Hanscom and her sister, Carol (Hanscom) Hartsoe.
Mary arrived to this life in October of 1948 in Boston, and was raised as the youngest of four children. Her own family began at Roslindale's Sacred Heart Church, in early 1969, when she married her sweetheart, Tony. He was serving in the Army, so they began their married life stationed in Germany before returning to Massachusetts and not long after, welcomed their 2 children, the lights of Mary's life.
Mary studied nursing at the Laboure' College of Healthcare in Milton, MA, and enjoyed a career in pediatrics, but Mary's greatest love and what she poured her whole self into were her family and the home they shared.
Her children and grandchildren will tell you that she was always there for them with kind words of encouragement and advice and plenty of hugs. They will always remember her sense of humor and fun personality, love of books and passion for reading, finding her puzzling her way through challenging word games, styling and decorating their home and hosting the best themed parties and holidays.
Mary loved the White Mountains and would visit North Conway. She spent memorable times with her grandchildren in Maine's York Beach, but at home, game nights and family dinners were where Mary sourced her joy.
She will be deeply missed by all those who loved her as Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Colleague, Neighbor, and Friend.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, July 23rd from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 24th at 11:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.
