Obituary

Paul Jerome Bongfeldt, 11 July 1935 – 9 July 2026

Paul Jerome Bongfeldt passed into God’s keeping at home in Harwich, Massachusetts, on July 9, 2026, two days prior to his ninety-first birthday.

Born in St. Paul, Paul lived episodes of his life in Minnesota, Washington, California, and Massachusetts, before spending his final years on Cape Cod. The son of Florence and Erick Bongfeldt, Paul was married 65 years to the Rev Juliet Sanson Bongfeldt. Paul was the proud father of Rebecca Cremin (Dennis), Andrew (Christine), and Elisa, and loving grandfather of Emma and Julia Cremin and Ryan, Logan, and Caitlin Bongfeldt. He is survived by his sister Sharon Bongfeldt and was predeceased by his brother Robert.

Following his graduation from Pacific Lutheran University in Washington, Paul spent a year at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, then redirected his life to insurance claims, eventually becoming Vice President of Claims for the Great Pacific Insurance Company. His love for woodworking and building led him to add a two-story addition to his home in Berkeley along with his architect friend and neighbor, along with numerous projects in his home on Cape Cod.

Paul’s love for music occupied much of his life. He subscribed to various musical series and, as a tenor, sang in numerous choirs, in church and in local theatre productions.

Every corner of Paul’s life was driven by his deep faith. He expressed his love for God and his neighbors by his involvement in many aspects of the Lutheran churches he belonged to, singing in choir, participating in social outreach and food ministries, and ensuring stability in church operations by supporting property and financial decisions.

Paul’s quiet demeanor, wisdom, and readiness to assist others made him deeply loved among those with whom he worshiped and served. His influence lives on through his lifelong love of the natural world, his faith community, and his family.

Memorial donations may be sent to St Peter’s Lutheran Church, 310 Rte 137, Harwich, Massachusetts 02645.
