
Betty Canady Turk, 94, of Ocilla, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, at Langdale Place in Valdosta, Georgia.
Born on September 7, 1931, in Statesboro, Georgia, Betty was the daughter of the late Pliny Lee Canady and Lillian Sams Canady.
When Betty was a young girl, her father, Pliny Lee "P.L." Canady, moved the family to Wadley, Georgia, where he served as station master for the historic Nancy Hanks passenger train that traveled between Savannah and Atlanta. Betty attended elementary school in Wadley and graduated from Wadley High School. During her school years, she was an active member of the girls' basketball team, the Beta Club, Future Homemakers of America, and the Glee Club.
She continued her education at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While in college, she was a member of the Modern Dance Club and Beta Alpha, the business fraternity.
Following graduation, Betty moved to Atlanta with friends and began her career as a customer service representative with the Citizens & Southern (C&S) Bank. It was in Atlanta that she met her husband, John Halbert "Hal" Turk. After their marriage, they returned to Ocilla to make their home and raise their family.
Betty was a faithful member of Ocilla Methodist Church, where she generously gave her time through Vacation Bible School and numerous church activities. She was deeply involved in her community, serving as a Brownie leader and volunteering with the Heart Association, American Cancer Society, the Fine ArtsClub, PTA, and many other civic and community events. Betty found great joy in serving others and making a positive difference in the lives of those around her. During the empty nest phase of her life, she worked at Turner’s Fine Furniture in Tifton, GA where she delighted in helping clients accessorize their homes.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Halbert "Hal" Turk; her sister, Francis McNeely of Wrens, Georgia; her cherished granddaughter, Olivia Cox of Snellville, Georgia; and her son-in-law, Jerry Dill of Ocilla, Georgia.
She is survived by her daughters, Dana Turk of Valdosta, Georgia; Angie Dill of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Melissa Strain (Bob) of Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Michael Dill (Lauren) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; Jake Dill(Haley) of Pauline, South Carolina; Kelly Dill (Catherine) of Jacksonville, Florida; James Norton of Snellville, Georgia; and Ben Norton of Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Darby Dill and Cy Dill of Pauline, South Carolina, and Aubree Cunningham of Jacksonville, Florida.
She is also survived by her nephew, Michael McNeely (Jennifer) of Mableton, Georgia, and her brother-in-law, Alec McNeely of Wrens and Augusta, Georgia.
Betty will be laid to rest at Ocilla Cemetery.
A celebration of life will be held at Ocilla Methodist Church, 2 PM, Saturday, August 1, 2026, with the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the church social hall.
Betty will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, her faith, and her community. Known as Bet-Bet to her grandchildren and their many friends, her gracious spirit, quiet strength, and generous heart touched countless lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Bet-Bet as she was.
