Douglas J. Murphy, age 81, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, in the presence of his loving family on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at the Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston. He was the beloved husband of Laura J. (Scarpellini) Murphy, to whom he was happily wed for sixty years.
Born in Attleboro, MA on July 12, 1944, he was a loving son of the late Lawrence E. and Doris L (Hicks) Murphy.
Doug grew up in Mansfield and was a 1962 graduate of Mansfield High School. He attended Northeastern University and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army National Guard.
Prior to retiring, Doug was the Director of Real Estate at the Buy America Real Estate Agency in Sharon. He was previously employed as a New England States Director of Distributions at Virco Manufacturing in Braintree and as a former Warehouse Manager and Supervisor for UPS.
A communicant of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield, Doug was well-known in the Mansfield community, where he was a member of the Mansfield Lodge of Elks, a former longtime member and former chairman of the Mansfield Council on Aging and bartended at the Regent Café, a former Mansfield landmark on North Main Street.
Doug’s family always came first and while his children where growing up, coached Pop Warner Football and served as a manager for Mansfield Little League. Along with his wife Laura, the couple traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad and he will always be remembered for the special place in his heart he had for animals, especially his sons dog “Chloe”.
Doug was a loyal Boston sports fan but his favorite team to cheer on was always the Los Angeles Raider’s, which led to his favorite quote “yes, it was a fumble.” Doug’s other interests included softball, skiing, riding motorcycles, whitewater rafting, sky diving and following high school, practiced martial arts.
In addition to his beloved wife Laura, he is survived by his devoted children, Kevin M. Murphy of Mansfield and Lisa M. Nightingale and her husband Craig of Phoenix, Arizona. He was the cherished and proud grandfather of Brianna MacKenzie and her husband Thomas of Mansfield, MacKenzie Greene of Phoenix, Arizona, Amanda Murphy of Mansfield, Luke Edwards of Phoenix, Arizona, Colleen Murphy of Mansfield, Matthew Murphy of Mansfield and the great grandfather of Hayden MacKenzie of Mansfield. He was the dear brother of the late Lawrence M. “Larry” Murphy and Larry’s late wife Diane and is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, June 26th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 27th at 10:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
