It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Johan DeVries on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the age of 83.
Johan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, whose quiet kindness and unwavering dedication touched the lives of many. You knew Johan liked you if he cooked for you.
Johan is survived by Leslie, his wife of 49 years, daughter Michelle (and husband Alex), son Johannes (and wife Catie), and daughter Sarah. His favorite, were undeniably, his grandchildren: Charlotte, Julia, Sierd and Johannes.
A man of few words, Johan was hardworking, open-minded, loyal, soft-hearted, and kind. He welcomed people from all walks of life and had a deep compassion for children, seniors, and animals.
At the age of 17, Johan came from Holland to pave the way for his family in America. Family was everything to him. He deeply loved and respected his mother and father and was generous to those he cared about.
An exceptional chef, Johan built his career at The Student Prince before opening his own restaurant, Johan’s, in downtown Springfield with his wife. Later, he continued sharing his gift for cooking with international students at MacDuffie School and the nuns at the Marian Center.
Johan had a remarkable memory and was always well-informed about world events. His idea of a perfect vacation was relaxing in his recliner with a stack of novels, reading one after another. He appreciated the simple things in life, loved Maine and GG, and was known for being quietly independent and, at times, stubborn.
Johan was also a proud veteran, and we honor his service and dedication to his country.
Details regarding services and a celebration of life will be shared in the coming days.
We are grateful for the love, support, and kindness shown to our family during this time as we honor a life well lived.
