Born on June 13, 1937, in Macon, Georgia, Tommy was the son of the late Thomas Leo Smallwood, Sr. and Della Bates Smallwood. He was raised in Macon, where he developed the strong values of hard work, faith, and devotion to family that guided him throughout his life.

Tommy proudly served his country in the United States Army and continued his service in the Army Reserves for six years. His sense of duty and quiet strength were evident in all aspects of his life.

Tommy dedicated his entire professional life to one company, beginning his career with C&S Bank—now Bank of America—at just 14 years old in the mailroom. Through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, he rose through the ranks to become Vice President of Bank of America in Tifton, Georgia. He found great joy in his work, especially in helping others navigate their finances and make important decisions for their families. His integrity, wisdom, and genuine care for people made a lasting impact on countless individuals in his community.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Tommy cherished his family above all else.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Merle Brewer Smallwood, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage; his daughter, Lisa (Bill) Hamilton; and his daughter-in-law, Kim Smallwood.

He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Leo (Chip) Smallwood, III.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Frances (Gordan) Noble, Betty (Wallace) Arnold, Martha Smallwood, and Tina Smallwood.

He was a proud grandfather to: Dr. Morgan Smallwood (Bryan Yates), Lauren (Eric) Lyons, Mariah (Jack) Gentry, and Abigail (Isaiah) Peter.

His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Aria Peter, Lydia Peter, June Gentry, and his future great-granddaughter, Eloise Lyons—each of whom brought him great joy and pride.

Tommy was a longtime and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Tifton and a dedicated member of the BOCH Sunday School class. His faith was an important part of his life and a source of strength and community.

He found simple joys in life, especially spending peaceful hours fishing in the pond in front of his home and working with his hands in his woodworking shop. These moments reflected his love for quiet reflection, craftsmanship, and the beauty of everyday life.

Tommy will be remembered for his gentle spirit, steady presence, and the unconditional love he gave so freely. He passed just days before his 89th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, service, and devotion to family that will live on in all who knew him.
