Robert Austin “Bob” Burgess
1956 – 2026
Robert Austin “Bob” Burgess, 70, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
A proud Merchant Marine, Bob dedicated many years at sea, working tirelessly to provide for his family. His career afforded him the opportunity to travel the globe, and he delighted in sharing the stories of his adventures with those he loved. When not at sea, Bob was happiest at home cooking for his family. His legendary mac and cheese, pea soup, and goulash, along with many other cherished recipes, will live on for generations. Though Bob navigated his share of rough waters and personal challenges throughout his life, becoming a grandfather marked a beautiful, profound turning point. His four grandchildren—Logan, Ethan, Aubrey, and Sophie—were the true light of his life. They brought him renewed purpose and immense pride, and his devotion to them shaped his happiest and most meaningful years.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Lila (MacLeod) Burgess; his son, Lachlan Burgess, and wife Tara (Lally); his daughter, Leslie Burgess; and his cherished grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters, Dale (Bill) Marcy and Pamela (Rob) Edmonston, along with his nieces, nephews, cousins, and his extended Prince Edward Island family. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Marvin and Sally (Campbell) Burgess; his grandparents, Austin and Irene Burgess; and several lifelong friends whose companionship he held close to his heart.
Bob will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family, his years of service at sea, his remarkable resilience, and the love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
In accordance with his wishes, Bob will be laid to rest on Prince Edward Island, Canada—a place where he spent many cherished summers and created lasting memories. The burial will be private for the family.
An avid Beales fan, he signs off with In My Life:
There are places I’ll remember
All my life, though some have changed.
Some forever, not for better;
Some have gone and some remain.
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall.
Some are dead and some are living.
In my Life I’ve loved them all.
