
Richard T. “Rick” Smith, 75, of Smithfield, died peacefully on May 13, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Suzanne M. (Paquette) Smith. They had been married for 54 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Clifton W. Smith and the late Jean Ann (Clegg) Smith. Rick had lived in Smithfield his entire life.
As a young man, Rick worked as a cook at Steere’s Restaurant. He was an apprentice at O’Brien’s Pattern Shop. He joined the Machine Shop at the Providence Journal as a machinist and enjoyed his job for 28 years prior to retirement. He enjoyed cooking, especially for family gatherings. He enjoyed carpentry and made many changes in our home. We never had to call a repairman when anything broke down in the house or the car prior to his illness. He served in the US Army. He was an active member of St Michael’s Church for many years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Tracey L. Smith of North Providence, Richard T. Smith Jr and his wife Rachel-Ann of North Smithfield, and Emily C. Smith and her wife Amy of Pawtucket. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren: Grace, Taylor, Isaiah, Amelia, Mary, Catherine, Thomas, John, Theresa, Calesia, and Maggie. He was the brother of the late Stanley C. Smith. He was the beloved brother-in-law of Kathleen and Kenneth Viveiros, and the late Cynthia Paquette. He was loved by his many nieces and nephews, including the late Jason Goucher. He will be greatly missed by his lifelong best friend, Butch.
Rick’s memory will always be in the hearts of those who knew his love, kindness and gentleness.
A Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Michael’s Church on May 18, 2026.
