Derek Barrette, 53, passed away on April 22, 2026 at home, surrounded by his family, after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Jerlina Silva, and his two daughters, Jehlivia Fernandes and Bella Barrette. He is also survived by his mother, Jane Barrette; brother Paul Barrette, sister-in-law Sandy, and their children Thomas and Jayna; sister Kathleen Johnson (Barrette), brother-in-law Chris, and their children Arielle and Dylan; brother Matthew Barrette; and sister Elizabeth Barrette and her daughter Halle. He was predeceased by his father, Paul Barrette.
Born and raised in North Providence, Rhode Island, Derek’s life was defined by love, kindness, compassion, and strength. The greatest joy in his life was spending time with Jerlina, Jehlivia, and Bella, who were his heart and purpose. A lifelong athlete, he loved carving out time to cheer on his daughters’ athletic pursuits–coaching Bella’s softball team and spending countless hours helping Jehlivia with her tennis skills.
A talented craftsman and business owner, Derek founded JB Rails and Fabrication alongside his father. He took great pride in his work and the relationships he built through his business.
Outside of work, Derek loved surprising his family with getaways to their favorite spots–usually to the beach, or to the New Hampshire mountains to places like Diana’s Baths. He loved renting a beach house–either locally near favorite beaches in Narragansett or Jamestown, or traveling farther south to Florida.
Derek was a lifelong Boston sports fan, and found great joy in cheering on his favorite teams in person. He was known for his generosity, loyalty, and selfless nature, and spent many years devoted to caring for his grandmother, Helen Lavery. He always showed up for his family and friends and cherished every moment spent with those he loved.
His favorite question to ask his family was, “Who loves you more than me?” And everyone knew the correct answer was, “NOBODY!” To honor Derek, his family asks that you reach out to the ones you love and remind them–often.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 28th, from 4-6 pm. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to his daughters, Jehlivia Fernandes and Bella Barrette, by visiting the link below:
