Donald E. Southern, 94, of Middletown, RI, died Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Heritage Hills Nursing Home in Smithfield. He was the husband of Anne E. (Bouchard) Southern. They had been married for 37 years.
Born in New London, CT, he was the son of the late Jesse and Jessie (Reid) Southern, and the twin brother of the late Gloria Southern.
Don served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from October 11, 1949 to June 16, 1953, and again from May 28, 1956 to June 27, 1958. During his time in the Navy, besides serving on several ships, he was a champion Navy boxer. After completing his service, he spent 14 years as a boxing coach. Don was also a house painter in Middletown for many years before retiring.
He is survived by his children Phillip, Dana, Shawna and Siobhan, two grandchildren, three stepdaughters and many extended family members.
Private services will be held at a later date. Donations can be made in his name to The Wounded Warriors Project or Disabled American Veterans.
