Ricardo Thompson (aka Rico, Mao, Cardo, Papa and Pa), 71, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, in Mattapan, MA. He was born on December 25, 1954, in Colon, Panama, to Leslie and Veronica Thompson (both proceeded in death).
At an early age (12), Rico's mother wanted a better life for him and his brother, which led them on a journey from Panama to the U.S. Soon after arriving, he attended Houghton Elementary School. Rico continued his education at Rindge TechnicalSchool where he was known as one of the best track runners.Following graduation from high school, he focused on Criminal Justice at Northeastern University.
After meeting the love of his life, Virginia Thompson, they brought their 7-year romance to the altar where they joined in matrimony at St. Paul's AME Church in Cambridge, MA on September 4, 1982. During their marriage, their family grew to include 2 children, Tyrell and Tania.
After working several years at Polaroid, a new careeropportunity with the MBTA presented itself, which allowed him to provide a better life for himself and his family. He was an extremely hard and dedicated worker, until unfortunately becoming ill in 2004, which caused him to retire much sooner than expected.
Prior to retiring, Rico brought Gini to Panama, introducing her to his family, conversing fluently in his native tongue while she listened on, unable to understand a word. They then rebranded their “couples retreat” into a family trip with the children, yet the language barrier remained.
Those who knew Rico also knew the simple routines and small joys that brought him happiness. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going on local weekend trips,sharing/spreading laughter and fellowship with those around him. There was no one who could down a Quarter Pound cheeseburger and a large Dr. Pepper as fast as Rico. The casino was a frequent destination where he, Gini and friends would attend for a night out. He joined a bowling league at Boston Bowl and during his years there, he also coached the youth scholarship bowling league. He also had a love for fishing and playing Baseball with his MBTA colleagues. He was always into something for the betterment of his family and the neighborhood youth.
Rico loved seeing folks happy at the numerous home cookouts that they hosted throughout the years. He also loved putting a smile on everyone’s face as well as a full stomach with his amazing cooking skills. He made everyone around him feel welcome, even if he didn’t know you. He was the best husband to his wife, best father to his children and best friend to his family and friends. To anyone who never met him, just know that he was full of life, joy, warmth, kindness and so much more. You may have missed out on meeting a great person, but you will not miss out on the memory of him whenever you are around his family and close friends.
Rico leaves to cherish in his memory, his wife Virginia Dee Nunley Thompson, their son Tyrell N. Thompson (wife Christina Thompson and their children Kori & Raegan, with one more on the way), daughter Tania Thompson, brother Leslie Thompson, sister’s Lidia and Paula, cousins Celia, Tashani, and many more cousins, along with a host of family members including in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services at the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home 10 Tower St. (Opp. Forest Hills MBTA Station) Jamaica Plain on Saturday April 18 from 12:30 - 2:30 PM.
