Obituary

SOUTH HADLEY – Marilyn A. (Ahern) Kenney, 90, of South Hadley and a longtime resident of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, April 9, 2026. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on July 23, 1935, a beloved daughter of the late Lawrence F. and Madelyn R. (Conroy) Ahern. She was raised in Hungry Hill section of Springfield where she graduated from Cathedral High School. After marrying her beloved husband, they raised their family in East Longmeadow. In 2003, as "empty nesters" they moved to South Hadley where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a communicant of Saint Patrick Church in South Hadley and prior, a longtime communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. She enjoyed bowling in the Ladies Bowling League at Shaker Bowl in East Longmeadow. She was also a member of the John Boyle O'Reilly Club in East Springfield, the Turnverein Club in Agawam and was very active at the YMCA in Springfield. She loved Tai Chi, ballroom dancing, tap dancing, and baking her "famous" brownies and Bethel Bars. Most of all, she was devoted to her husband and family, taking great pride in supporting her children and grandchildren in all of their endeavors including dance, sports, and school plays over the years. She leaves her loving husband and soul mate, Lawrence J. "Larry" Kenney. They were married at the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield on October 10, 1964 and were blessed with over 61 years of happiness together. She also leaves her four loving and devoted children, Christopher J. Kenney and his wife, Lori, of Essex, CT, Karen A. Conway and her husband Timothy, of Walpole, MA, Elizabeth M. Fitzpatrick and her husband, Shawn, of Jamaica Plain, MA, and Martha E. Godfroy and her husband, David, of Hopkinton, MA; her five cherished grandchildren, Brian Giacalone and his wife, Maddy, Heather Kenney, William Conway, Madelyn Godfroy, and Amelia Godfroy; her dear niece, Kathleen Burton and her wife, Nancy Phillips, of Oak Bluffs, MA; her cherished grandniece, Annie Burton Beauregard and her husband, Michael of Cambridge, MA; and her many dear friends and extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two dear brothers, John Ahern and Robert Ahern; and her dear sister-in-law, Nancy Burton. Her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the ICU Staff at Baystate Medical Center for their compassionate care. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning, April 17, 2026 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels,(413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Patrick Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday morning, April 17, 2026 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. before the Mass.
