Obituary

John “Yianni” Poulo, 79, of Worcester died Thursday, April 9th at UMASS Memorial Medical Center – Memorial Campus, after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Yolanda (Papalilo) Poulo who was the love of his life; his son, Peter Poulo and his partner, Shane Cassidy of Worcester; his daughter, Elaine Poulo all of Worcester; his sister, Patra Covanidis of Istanbul, Turkey and her children; Sevasti Barbalonis and her husband, Hristo and their children, Melina and Alexi; and Kosta Covanidis and his wife, Laura and their children, Yani and Sergio; his sister-in-law, Marina Mitre and her husband, Vangel and their children, George Mitre and his wife, Kasia and their children, Marino, Matteo, and Viktoria; and Marika Clemmer and her husband, Seth and their children, Evangelos, Penelope and Alexandros.

Born in Istanbul, Turkey the son of the late Ilia and Eleni (Daskalakis) Poulo, John immigrated to the United States in 1975. Through hard work and perseverance, he built a life centered on family, faith, and commitment. He was employed at Madison Cable for over 30 years as a machine operator, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. He retired in 2014, leaving behind the respect and admiration of his coworkers.
John was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where his connection to his heritage and faith remained an important part of his life. He found joy in simple pleasures, especially watching soccer, and was a passionate fan of Galatasaray, proudly following their matches in the Champions League.
Above all, John loved his family deeply. He was a dedicated and caring husband who selflessly and tirelessly cared for his wife with unwavering devotion until his own health declined. His kindness, strength, and quiet sacrifices will be remembered by all who knew him.
John’s life was one of resilience, loyalty, and love—a life that will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
His visitation will be on Wednesday, April 15th in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. followed by his funeral service at NOON. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster Street, Worcester. O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue is assisting the family with arrangements.
