Today, we come together to celebrate the life of Wilbert Lee Greene—a
devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend whose
presence brought strength, wisdom, and love to all who knew him.
Wilbert Lee Greene was born on April 26, 1941, in Kinston, North Carolina, to Mark Greene Sr. and Martha Elizabeth Greene. From an early age, Wilbert embodied the strength, resilience, and values that would guide him throughout his life. Those who knew him could see that his foundation was built on perseverance, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility.
Wilbert found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed watching football and basketball, collecting coins and stamps, and taking time to relax and reflect. He also had a deep love for gardening, which became one of his greatest passions. Wilbert took immense pride in his yard, carefully tending to it with patience and dedication. It was more than just a hobby; it was a reflection of his care, his, discipline, and the pride he took in everything he did. These simple joys brought him peace and kept him connected to the things he loved most.
Wilbert was a man of remarkable dedication and an extraordinary work ethic. He proudly served his community through two careers that he managed simultaneously. For many years, he worked for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), where he was known for his reliability, steady presence, and commitment to keeping Boston moving.
At the same time, he also served with the United States Postal Service,
bringing that same level of dependability, discipline, and integrity to every route and every shift.
Balancing both roles was no small task, yet Wilbert carried this responsibility with quiet strength and determination. His ability to do so speaks volumes about the kind of man he was—hardworking, focused, and deeply committed to providing for his family and serving his community. His years of service stand as a lasting testament to his character and perseverance.
While living in Boston, Wilbert found a partner with whom he built a beautiful life, Carrie. Their connection was undeniable, and together they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. Their home was a place of warmth, laughter, and unwavering support—a reflection of the bond they shared and the values they instilled in their children.
Wilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Mark Sr. and Martha Elizabeth Greene; his beloved wife, Carrie Lee Greene; his children, Wilbert Jr. “Willie” Greene and Diane Greene; and his siblings, Cleo Greene, Lyndell Greene, Delores Greene Caster, Alton Greene (wife, Estelle), Linda Faye Greene Thompson, Winston Greene (wife, Marva), and Mark “Buck” Greene.
He is survived by his loving children, Tyrone Greene, James Greene, and Shauna Greene; his cherished grandchildren, Tarayia, Jayana, Briana, Shalayia, James Jr., Jordan, and Justin; his great-grandchildren, Teigan, Natoleph, Niko, and Persais; his brother, Roosevelt Gooding (wife, Cora “Liz”); and his sisters, Gerald Evangeline Greene Martin (husband, Larry —deceased) and Bernice Greene Johnson (husband, Lewis), along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends.
While we mourn the loss of Wilbert Lee Greene, we also celebrate a life well lived—a life defined by strength, love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to family.
Though he is no longer with us in the physical sense, his spirit lives on in each of us—in the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the memories we will carry forever. He showed us how to stand strong through life’s challenges, how to love deeply, and how to find light even in difficult moments.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone for your love, support, and
presence during this time. Your kindness means more than words can express.
