Obituary

Mary Margaret (Merchant) Johnson

December 23, 1959 – April 3, 2026

With heavy hearts, on April 3rd, 2026, Mary Margaret (Merchant) Johnson passed away suddenly from natural causes.

She is survived by her loving children, Hillary (Johnson) Sandoval; Edgar H. Johnson Jr. and daughter-in-law Cara Orsie-Johnson of Whitman; and her son Clayton Johnson of Weymouth. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Jacob Orsie, Genevieve Johnson, Ceny Sandoval, and Helena Orsie-Johnson.

Mary was born in Seattle, Washington on December 23rd, 1959, to the late Claire Sturgis of Brockton and Robert Merchant of Seattle. She grew up on Angelo Street in Brockton, Massachusetts, where she formed lifelong friendships that became family. The adventures she shared with those dear friends became some of the most treasured stories we were so lucky to hear.

In her younger years, Mary fed her adventurous spirit by traveling as far as Australia, and sometimes as close as camping in Mansfield, MA. As long as she was surrounded by good people, she was exactly where she wanted to be.

Mary had a heart big enough for everyone she met. Her warmth and openness made people feel instantly safe and welcome. There wasn’t a person she couldn’t strike up a conversation with.

Her creative energy was endless. She found joy in turning what others might see as nothing into something meaningful and useful. To Mary, nothing was ever truly wasteful everything had the potential to become something more.

Her love for baking and cooking shone through in every meal she made. She believed in following recipes exactly as written, often saying, “It just won’t taste as good!” She had all four of her grandchildren cracking eggs and mixing bowls before they were even potty trained. Everything she made was unforgettable, and everyone has a favorite Grandma Mary dish.

Her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother. She lovingly cared for her grandchildren and even a few “bonus kids,” always filling their days with crafts, games, and creativity. Her experience working with preschoolers before having her own children shaped the way she nurtured and guided the next generation.

Mary was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. She was at the heart of every gathering, making sure everyone left with full stomachs, something useful in hand, and a story or new fact to share.

Her high school quote, which perfectly reflected the way she lived her life, was:

“Real joy comes not from ease or riches, or from the praise of man, but from doing something worthwhile.”

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
