
Mrs. Leona E. (Porter) Doherty a resident of Andover since 1966 and beloved wife of Atty. Henry T. Doherty, Jr., passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington on February 28, 2026. She was a vigorous 92 years old.
Leona was born in Winchester, Massachusetts and grew up in Wilmington, the daughter of Henry J. And Doris (Wilson) Porter. She was the youngest child of 4 children, predeceased by her three sisters. Leona was a retired Registered Nurse, having graduated in 1952 from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing in Brighton, MA. Upon graduation, she was employed by the Winchester Hospital. Shortly after her marriage to Henry and moving to Boston, she was employed as a Special Nurse in several hospitals in the area. Following the birth of her children, she choose to be a volunteer nurse at their elementary school, St Augustine’s School. Nursing was her passion and she remained faithful to that profession. Leona had 5 children, and despite being a devoted mother she was able to pursue her interests which included reading, knitting and crocheting. Leona was very athletic; a member of the Merrimack Striders club, and she participated in road races including Boston Marathons. She enjoyed hiking trips throughout Europe with her husband as well as locally with a ladies walking group., She was involved in all activities, sports or otherwise, that her children participated in.
Leona was blessed with a generous, kind, heart and was welcoming to everyone she met. Despite her advanced age, Leona in her later years remained cheerful, helpful and up to date on current events.
Sadly missed by her beloved husband, Henry, Leona is survived by her loving children; Atty. Henry T. (Deborah) Doherty of Acton, Atty. Leah M. (John) Clemedtson of Horace, North Dakota, Atty. Philip J. (Michele) Doherty of Boxford, Atty. Kenneth P. (Eileen) Doherty of Newburyport and Matthew J. (Shannon) Doherty of Horace, North Dakota; eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Eleanor Kelley, Eileen Montgomery and Geraldine Doane.
Her funeral service will be celebrated in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 4 to 7 PM. Interment will be held in the St. Augustine Cemetery in Andover.
