
Mrs. Marie (O'Leary) MacSweeney, a longtime resident of Medford and beloved wife of the late Mortimer L. MacSweeney, passed away at her home in Medford on Thursday morning, February 26, 2026. She was 100 years old.
Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, on September 14, 1925, she was the beloved daughter of the late James and Mary (Cotter) O'Leary. Marie worked as a Salesclerk at Filene’s for many years, where she honed her sense of style. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading historical fiction and loved discussing politics. She was an active communicant at St. Joseph Church in Medford, where she served on the Liturgy Committee and on the church’s beatification committee. Marie had been involved with the Medford Thursday Fortnightly Club, Catholic Club, and Medford Jingle Bell Festival charitable organizations. Marie will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her loving children; Deborah Sullivan of Canton, James and his wife Judith MacSweeney of Canton, Robert and his wife Pamela MacSweeney of Tewksbury, Laura and her husband William McDonough of Medford and Mark MacSweeney of Medford, grandchildren; Jennifer Rabito (Lou), Shauna Collins (Daniel), Joseph, Sean, Brian and Erica MacSweeney, Daniel Sullivan (Ashley), Cole (Michelle) and Quinn (Marissa) McDonough, great-grandchildren; Luke, Matthew, Eveleen, Jack, Reid, JJ, Luke, Callan and Vivienne and many nieces and nephews. Marie was also the mother of the late Michael MacSweeney, grandmother of the late Ryan MacSweeney, mother-in-law of the late John Sullivan, and sister of the late Edward, Teddy, Francis, James, and Will O’Leary, Dorothy Clinton, and Irene Lydon.
Her funeral will be held from the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Monday, March 2, 2026, at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford at 11 AM.
