Obituary

Evelyn M. (Vero) Medeiros, 84, of Heritage of Dartmouth, formerly of New Bedford, died Thursday September 5, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness.

She was the wife of the late John C. Medeiros, to whom she had been married for 53 years. The couple had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 11, 1991.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel and Emma (Jefferson) Vero, she lived in New Bedford most of her life before moving to Heritage of Dartmouth.

Mrs. Medeiros was a graduate of St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1938, and had worked in the maternity ward at St. Luke's Hospital and had also provided private duty nursing until 1966, at which time she became the Director of Nursing at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home.

Upon retiring in 1983, she became a substitute school nurse for the New Bedford Public Schools and served for several years in the kindergarten at the William H. Taylor School where she was known as "Gramma Medeiros".

She was a former member of Teamsters Local 59, New Bedford High School Band Boosters Club, the American Nurses Association and the United Portuguese Women's Club.

Survivors include a son, David J. Medeiros, and his wife Beth, of Fairhaven; 2 daughters, Deanna M. Vargo, and her husband Joseph, and Denise A. Beck, all of New Bedford; 2 special sisters-in-law, Estelle Souza and Eileen Medeiros; 8 grandchildren whom she took great pleasure in: Michael Vargo of Westchester, Cal., Eric Vargo of Playa del Ray, Cal., Sarah Medeiros of Manchester, NH, Matthew Medeiros of La Jolla, Cal., Kimberly Moxin of Holly Springs, NC, Kristofer Haws of Natick, and Nathan Haws and Zackary Beck , both of New Bedford; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordMonday, September 9, 2002 at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church, North Dartmouth, at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.Visiting hours Sunday, September 8, 2002 from 4-8 PM.Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
