Roshine Ruddy of West Roxbury, formerly Roise McGill of Fintown, County Donegal, Ireland passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026, at the age of 87 surrounded by her devoted husband, Denis, and her four loving children, Bernard, David, Roshine and Denise.
Roshine was born the 14th of 18 children to the late Annie and Patrick McGill of Meenadoan, Ireland. She was raised “out the back of the hill” in a thatched roof cottage with no running water where she spent her childhood shoeless in the rugged peat filled fields and bogs of Donegal. She left her home as a teenager to work factory jobs under the watchful eyes of her sisters, the late Annie McGill and Nellie McNamara, in post-war Glasgow where she would meet her one true love, Denis, a bartender at the Balmoral Pub, quick stepping to country western music at a church dance hall in Kinning Park. In 1961, they would emigrate to Cambridge, MA. and get married at St. Peter’s Church down the road from Denis’s aunt, Anne Brennan, and his sisters, Francis Guinan and Anne Gray. It was there that they would develop a lifelong friendship with William “Bud” and Mary Lane who would later encourage them to settle in a two-family home in West Roxbury. Roshine brought the spirit of Donegal to West Roxbury where she raised her family with devotion and grace, building lasting friendships with so many especially the Ross, Rohan and Largess families.
“Mum” was the center of our family, strong, resilient and loving. She was the original “dance and soccer” mum, deeply involved in her children’s education, soccer and Irish dance activities. She was well known for sharing her truths with family and friends alike, whether they wanted to hear them or not, and spent the final years of her life as a loving grandmother, or “Nina” as she was affectionately called, which brought her life’s greatest joy. She had a strong faith in God and belief in her patron saint, Saint Martin Apostolate. Please keep her in your prayers during this difficult time.
Roshine is survived by her brothers, Kevin, Sean and Jimmy McGill of Fintown, Ireland, her husband, Denis Ruddy, her children and their spouses; Bernard and Christina Ruddy, David Ruddy and Penny Mapa, Roshine and Michael McCarthy and Denise and David Cugini, and her 8 grandchildren; Isabella Pontecorvo and Áine Ruddy, Emma and Finn Ruddy, Ronan, Róisín, and Colm McCarthy, and Finley Cugini.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Friday, February 27th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Gormley’s Funeral Home in West Roxbury. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28th at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name Church in West Roxbury with Reverand Thomas Macdonald officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Roshine’s name to the Saint Martin Apostolate at https://www.stmartin.ie/ and MGB Cancer Institute at https://giving.massgeneral.org/donate/mgb-cancer-institute, causes close to Mum’s heart.
