
Dr. Seshagiri Rao Mallampati

Dr. Seshagiri Rao Mallampati, a visionary anesthesiologist whose clinical observations revolutionized modern surgical safety, passed away on February 9th, 2026 at the age of 85 in Brookline, MA.
Born in 1941 in Patchalatadiparru, Andhra Pradesh, India, to the late Veeraiah Mallampati and the late Anasuyamma Mallampati, Dr. Mallampati’s journey in medicine began at Andhra Medical College, where he graduated in 1968. In 1971, he emigrated to the United States, completing his residency at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and a fellowship at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Mallampati is globally renowned for developing the Mallampati Score in 1985. His simple, non-invasive test became a cornerstone of preoperative assessment, used by clinicians worldwide to enhance patient safety by predicting difficult airways. Throughout his career, he served as an Attending Anesthesiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor at Harvard, leaving a legacy of mentorship that spans generations of physicians.
Beyond his professional brilliance, he was beloved by his family and a man of quiet, deep intellect. He is survived by his elder brother, Butchi Rao Mallampati; his elder sister, Bharati Devi Davuluri; and his younger sister, Kusuma Kumari Cherukuri. He was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest sister, Rajya Lakshmi Yalavarthy.
In honor of Dr. Mallampati’s life-saving contributions to medicine, a Memorial Service will be held at 11.30am on February 24th at 500 Canterbury St, Boston, MA 02131.
