Obituary

Sidney Lanier Lewis, 88, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord on February 19, 2026.

Born on August 8, 1937 in Rebecca, Turner County, Georgia to George and Laura Lewis, Sidney spent most of his career working outdoors at Moore Lumber Company, a job he truly enjoyed. He was of the Baptist faith.

Sidney was a gentle, humble, kindhearted soul who loved everyone he met and was loved in return. When he entered a room, he brought with him a quiet sense of calm. A true gentle giant, Sidney devoted several years caring for his beloved mother, Laura Lewis, as they shared companionship in his cozy home.

He was known for his witty sense of humor, often catching others off guard with a clever remark that left them smiling. Sidney enjoyed “tinkering,” as he called it. Whether it was repairing cars, fixing appliances, or troubleshooting electronics, he had a knack for repairing just about anything — and he found great joy in doing so. He also loved visiting flea markets and yard sales with his brother Gene, always hoping to uncover a hidden treasure. The two shared a special bond and often spent time playing guitar together.

Above all, Sidney cherished time spent with his family, especially during gatherings and celebrations.

Sidney will be dearly missed by the family he leaves behind which includes two sisters: Avis Josey and LaVerne Pitts, both of Fitzgerald, Georgia; one sister-in-law: Magdalene Lewis of Fitzgerald, Georgia; nieces and nephews: Teresa (David) Reynolds of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Glenn Josey of Tifton, Georgia, Gary (Phyllis) Lewis of Perry, Florida, Cathy (Jim) Spooner of Monroe, Georgia, Sandra (David) Chaney, Mike Lewis, Kent (Jackie) Josey, Darrell Lewis, Janet (Greg) Muse all of Fitzgerald, Georgia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Ira Lewis and Gene Lewis; two brothers-in-law: Jimmy Josey and Reuben Pitts; and a niece: Denise Ring.

A funeral service will be held at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund c/o Lacey Harris, 2860 Georgia Highway 112 West, Ashburn, Georgia 31714.
